The Winepress
by Josef Essberger

"You don't have to be French to enjoy a decent red wine," Charles Jousselin de Gruse used to tell his foreign guests whenever he entertained them in Paris. "But you do have to be French to recognize one," he would add with a laugh.

Verb 4 : Klasifikasi Verba Utama

·       Verba Transitif dan Intransitif (Transitive and Intransitive Verbs)
·       Verba Tautan (Linking Verbs)
·       Verba Tindakan dan Keadaan (Action and State Verbs)
·       Verba Regular dan Iregular (Regular and Irregular Verbs)

1.  Verba Transitif dan Intransitif

Verba transitif adalah verba yang memerlukan obyek penderita (direct object).

Misalnya:
·       He speaks English. (Dia berbicara bahasa Inggris.)
·       We are watching TV. (Kami sedang menonton TV.)
·       I saw an elephant. (Saya melihat seekor gajah.)

Verba intransitif adalah verba yang tidak memerlukan obyek penderita (direct object).

Misalnya:
·       She speaks fast. (Dia berbicara cepat.)
·       John goes to school. (John pergi ke sekolah.)
·       He has arrived. (Dia telah tiba.)

2.  Verba Tautan

Misalnya:
·       Mary is a teacher. (Mary adalah seorang guru.) atau (Mary seorang guru.)
·       Tara is beautiful. (Tara cantik.)
·       That sounds interesting. (Hal Itu kedengaran menarik.) atau (Hal itu menarik.)
·       The sky became dark. (Langit menjadi gelap.) atau (Langit gelap.)
·       The bread has gone bad.

·       be
·       like, love, prefer, wish
·       impress, please, surprise
·       hear, see, sound
·       belong to, consist of, contain, include, need
·       appear, resemble, seem

·       look, looked, looked
·       work, worked, worked
·       listen to, listened to, listened to

Sedangkan verba-verba yang termasuk daftar Verba Iregular antara lain:
·       buy, bought, bought
·       cut, cut, cut
·       do, did, done

Untuk memudahkan pengertiannya, dapat dikatakan bahwa semua verba adalah Verba Regular, kecuali verba-verba yang termasuk dalam Daftar Verba Iregular.

Catatan:

Sebuah verba bisa saja diklasifikasikan ke dalam lebih dari satu kelompok verba, misalnya:
·       speak – spoke –spoken (verba transitif, intransitif, iregular)
·       is – was – been (verba tautan, keadaan, iregular)
·       look – looked – looked (verba intransitif, keadaan, regular)

·       Past Continuous Tense:
 I/HE/She/It : was
 We/You/They: were

·       Future Continuous Tense:
I/We: shall be (British) atau will be (American)
       HE/She/It/You/They: will be

1.b     Auxilary Verb “have”

Coba Anda perhatikan contoh-contoh kalimat Auxiliary Verbs (verb “have” sebagai auxiliary verb):

1.   I have already finished my work. (Saya telah menyelesaikan pekerjaan saya.)
       → perfect tense

2.   I have not finished my work yet. (Saya belum menyelesaikan pekerjaan saya.)

1.c     Auxilary Verb “do”

Coba Anda perhatikan contoh-contoh kalimat berikut ini (verb “do” sebagai auxiliary verb):

1.   I like mathematics. (Saya suka matematika.)
I do not like mathematics. (Saya tidak suka matematika.)→ negatif

2.   I want some coffee. (Saya minta kopi.)
Do you want some coffee? (Aapakah kamu minta kopi?) → pertanyaan

3.   I want you pass your exam. (Saya ingin agar kamu lulus ujian.)
I do want you pass your exam. (Saya benar-benar ingin agar kamu lulus ujian.) → penekanan

1.   He did his job very well. (Dia mengerjakan tugasnya dengan sangat baik.)

2.   She didn’t do her homework at home. (Dia tidak mengerjakan PR-nya di rumah.)

Perubahan Bentuk Auxilary Verb “do”

·       Present Simple Tense:
       I/We/You/They: do
       HE/She/It :does

·       Past Simple Tense:
       I/HE/She/It/We/You/They: did

·       Future Simple Tense:
I/We: shall do (British) atau will do (American)
       HE/She/It/You/They: will do

2.  Modal Verb

Paling sedikit ada 10 verba yang termasuk ke dalam kelompok Modal Verbs, yaitu: can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must, dan ought to.

Semua verba modal tersebut mempunyai fungsi yang sama, yaitu menambahkan makna kemungkinan, kemampuan  dan sebagainya pada verba yang dibantunya (yang diletakkan di belakanya).

Misalnya:

1.   John speaks German. (John berbicara bahasa Jerman.)
John can speak German. (John dapat berbicara bahasa Jerman.)

2.   James arrives late. (James datang terlambat.)
James may arrive late. (James bisa datang terlambat.)

3.   You see a doctor. (Kamu pergi ke dokter.)
You should see a doctor. (Sebaiknya kamu pergi ke dokter.)

4.   I go now. (Saya pergi sekarang.)
I must go now. (Saya harus pergi sekarang.)

Cara mudah untuk membedakan apakah sebuah verba termasuk modal verb atau main verb adalah dengan melakukan 2 hal sebagai berikut untuk mengujinya, yaitu:

1.   Ubahlah verba tersebut dari bentuk infinitif  menjadi bentuk negatif, misalnya:
      a.   Modal verb must, misalnya, “bisa” diubah menjadi must not atau mustn’t.
      b.   Main verb speak, misalnya,  “tidak bisa” diubah menjadi speak not atau speakn’t.

2.   Ubahlah kalimat yang mengandung verba tersebut dari pernyataan menjadi pertanyaan, misalnya:
      a.   Modal verb:
He will go to Bali next week, (pernyataan)
When will he go to Bali? (pertanyaan)
      b.   Main verb:
She made me a cup of coffee. (pernyataan)
What did she make you? (pertanyaan)

Semi-Modal Verb

Selain kedua kelompok Helping Verbs di atas, paling sedikit ada 5 verba lain termasuk ke dalam klasisikasi Semi Modal Verb. Disebut demikian karena verba tersebut berfungsi sebagai modal verb tetapi kelihatannya seperti main verb. Bila diubah menjadi bentuk verba negatif, verba tersebut tidak memerlukan verba bantu lain di depannya.

Ada 5 verba yang termasuk ke dalam kelompok ini, yaitu: have to, want to, need to, dare to dan used to.

Misalnya:

1.   I have to study hard. I don’t have to study hard. (bukan: have not to atau haven’t to)

2.   They wanted to learn German. They didn’t want to learn German. (bukan: wanted not to)

3.   She needs to try it before buying. She doesn’t need to try it before buying. (bukan: needs not to)

4.   He dared to take a risk. He didn’t dare to take a risk. (bukan: dared not to)

5.   I used to take a bus. I didn’t use to take a bus. (bukan: used not to)
